Let us know what you listen to on HF and i will post some wavs or vids with AOR and various over radios from my modest setup if you think this may help So for example using this radio for utility and Ham band reception you would be ok, but again this is not a radio that gives you the tools to hear the really weak ones or fancy dsp filters. The radio works fine on the shortwave bands for general listening using the suppleid whip antenna which show there is a lot of gain in the front end, i am able to pick up broadcast stations and HF airbands for example with no problems this way.If i use a proper antenna on the shortwaves i must run the radio with the att switched in line and have found the radio to perform ok in fact better than expected it will not outperform a good dedicated HF receiver but it is not to far behind, adding a preselector and outboard filters make this radio a lot of fun. The radio works fine on the AM band with supplied ferrite antenna using anything else like active antennas or beverages is going to lead to disappointment in my opinion, if chasing NDB's or AM dx is your thing buy something else. ? Still not sure how that would be on SW ?Not sure if it has a standard recorder output from the rear for decoding ACARS etc, or for decoding on SWAccording to the AOR website is very good on SW ?Anyone here have one / offer advice The usual suppliers tell me its the best thing going, but then they tell me that about pretty much any reciever I ask about :0Is it comparable to a Uniden scanner + decent SW reciever ?The 8600 would walk all over your bearcat on vhf/uhf but like all radios it will only perform has good as your weakest link so good antennas and feeder etc are needed dont expect to hear much above 1ghz unless your prepared to tweak your setup, in general it is has good has a dedicated banded radio from about 4 meters upwards (with a comparable antenna).
